Weight Management? Is it a Struggle for You?

Weight Management is a highly complex issue. Interestingly, as the weight loss industry appears to be making more and more money, our Australian population seems to be getting more and more obese!

And a key factor that appears to be missing from the weight loss industry, is the focus on assisting people to recognise and deal with the psychological factors of weight management.

The reasons why people can struggle with managing their own weight can consist of some of the following issues:

  • An underlying relationship with food that has not been consciously recognised – seeing food as exciting or a comfort
  • Personality traits – black and white thinking; perfectionists attitudes; tomorrow is another day; not wanting to experience difficult emotions; having poor impulse control; self-respect
  • Clinical issues – depression, anxiety, previous sexual abuse
  • Life Cycle Issues – such as pregnancy, menopause
  • Limited knowledge on how to manage food intake and exercise
  • A nervousness about exercising and not knowing how to start
  • Poor stress management techniques
  • Poor sleeping habits (the less sleep you get, the harder it can be to lose weight)
  • Medications
  • A medical issue – such as underactive thyroid

While it appears that most of us “know” what to do, one (or more) of the above factors makes it difficult for us to put in action.
